Thapar Institute of Engineering & Technology TIET - 2006 MSc. Biotechnology Admission Notice
The MSc (Biotechnology) programme, duly sponsored by the Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India, is an inter-disciplinary Programme of two years duration. The programme aims at training manpower in the thrust areas of Biotechnology, such as Agricultural Biotechnology, Applied Microbiology and Industrial Biotechnology and Recombinant DNA Technology. Graduates trained in this programme would be exposed to diverse placement opportunities and find openings in fermentation industries, biopesticide/biofertilizer production industries, agro-biotech industries, consulting firms, Pollution Boards, Waste Treatment Process Consultants, R & D Institutes and Universities, etc.
The strength of MSc programme at TIET is its synergy with other engineering/technology disciplines in which education is being offered at our institute. The Department of Biotechnology & Environmental Sciences at the Institute, TCIRD and TIFAC-CORE at TTC have well-equipped biotechnological labs and expertise involved in various research activities.
Courses offered during the programme include Microbial Physiology & Genetics, Biochemistry, Biostatistics & Bioinformatics, Cell and Molecular Biology, Bio-Techniques, Genetic & Metabolic Engineering, Bioprocess Technology, Immunology & Virology, Food Biotechnology, Agricultual & Industrial Microbiology, Entrepreneurship & Biosafety, Plant Biotechnology &Tissue Culture, Pharmaceutical Biotechnology, Bioreactors & Instrumentation and Environmental Biotechnology. In addition to the course work, the students undergo summer training Programme in biotechnology based industry/R&D institutions/Universities. In third and fourth semesters, the students undertake research project in one of the thrust areas that lead to dissertation as a partial fulfillment to M.Sc. Programme and the students also need to present seminar and term paper on any areas of modern biology & biotechnology.
NUMBER OF SEATS
The total number of seats is 28. Ten students will be admitted through combined entrance examination to be conducted by JNU and 13 from the entrance examination conducted by TIET. Five seats are reserved for sponsored candidates.
4 seats, over and above the sanctioned intake of 28 are available for FN/NRI candidates.In case of Non availability of FN/NRI candidates, the vacant seat(s) will be offered to FNS/NRIS candidates.
M.Sc. Biotechnology ENTRANCE EXAMINATIONS
A candidate may appear in either or both of the Entrance Examinations.
(a) JNU Conducted Entrance Examination
(b) TIET Conducted Entrance Examination
(a) JNU Conducted Combined Entrance Examination
JNU will hold a Combined Entrance Examination for admission to Two-Year MSc programme in Biotechnology for all the participating Universities.
The Entrance Examination will be held at 68 Centres spread all over the country on May 18, 2006 . For details regarding eligibility criteria, selection procedure, reservation of seats, etc., please refer to the information brochure issued by the JNU, New Delhi

2. Eligibility for Admission
(a) For Open Merit and SC/ST Candidates
Candidates with bachelor’s degree under 10+2+3 pattern of education in Physical, Biological, Agricultural, Veterinary, and Fishery Sciences, Pharmacy, Engineering Technology, 4-Years BS (Physician Assistant) Course, Medicine (MBBS) or BDS with at least 50% marks.
(b) For Sponsored Candidates
Candidates with bachelor’s degree under 10+2+3 pattern of education in Physical, Biological, Agricultural,
Veterinary, and Fishery Sciences, Pharmacy, Engineering Technology, 4-Years BS (Physician Assistant) Course, or Medicine (MBBS) or BDS with at least 55% marks.
Such candidates must have a minimum of two years of full time work experience in a registered firm/company/industry/educational and research institutions/any Government Department of Government Organization in the relevant field in which admission is being sought. The employer in the sponsorship certificate must indicate that the fee will be borne by the sponsoring organization and the candidate will not be withdrawn before the completion of the programme.
3. The application form complete in all respects should reach the Registrar by 5.00 PM on 29.05.2006. However the application form can be submitted by 5.00 PM on 05.06.2006 with late fee. Incomplete application forms and those received after the prescribed date will not be entertained under any circumstances. No correspondence/enquiry from such candidates shall be entertained.
The form can be down loaded from the website (www.tiet.ac.in) and must be accompanied by a crossed Demand Draft of Rs. 750/- drawn in favour of Registrar, TIET, Patiala, payable at Patiala in addition to the examination fee of Rs 1000/-.
4. Application must be accompanied by a crossed Bank Draft of Rs. 1000/- drawn in favour of the Registrar, TIET, Patiala and payable at Patiala .
(a) One Passport size photograph pasted on the application form in the space provided for the purpose.
(b) Two Passport size photographs (of the same negative) pasted on the entrance examination admit card for the purpose.
© Candidate wishes to claim an advantage of belonging to Scheduled Caste/Tribe, He/She is required to submit certificate as per format in annexure II. Unfilled seats in this category shall be transferred to open merit seats.
Note:
(i) Provisional certificate from any authority whosoever will not be accepted on any grounds.
(ii) If a candidate does not receive the admit card by 05.06.2006 he/she should contact the Registrar(0175-2393324) of the Institute for issue of duplicate admit card. He/She should bring with him/her one passport size photograph.
5. The entrance consists of two papers carrying 40 & 60 marks respectively.
6. SELECTION PROCEDURE
(i) The admission committee will prepare a merit list of candidates on the basis of their performance in the Entrance Examination. Candidates in the merit list will be called for interview. The candidates will be required to produce original certificates, marks sheets, degree and other documents at the time of interview. In all cases the decision of the Admission Committee shall be final and binding on the candidates.
(ii) The inter se merit of the candidates securing equal marks in the entrance examination will be determined with the following criteria.
(a) Candidate senior in age shall rank higher in order of merit.
(b) In the case of a tie in age also, a candidate getting higher percentage of marks in the qualifying examination shall rank higher in order of merit.
(iii) Candidates called for interview on a particular date shall report at scheduled time in the auditorium of the Institute. A candidate who reports late will be offered seat, if available, at that time.
7. Each candidate will be supplied Entrance Examination Card as an authority for admission to the examination centre. The candidate shall be admitted to the examination only on production of the same.
8. Eligibility of Candidates who are due to appear in the qualifying examination.
As given in the JNU Conducted Examination.
9. All candidates must produce certificate of migration within a month of enrolment.
REFUND OF FEE
In case a student leaves the Institute a day before the second counselling, he/she will be refunded the balance amount after deduction of Rs. 5000/- from the total fees deposited by him/her.
In case a student leaves the Institute after the date specified above, he/she will be refunded only the Institute security, caution money and alumni fee.
All outstanding dues will, however, be recovered before such refund is made.
NRI/FN/NRIS/FNS Candidates
These seats will be over and above the sanctioned strength. The candidates seeking admission under this category having foreign qualification shall be required to furnish equivalence certificate of qualifying examination from AIU located at AIU House, 16 Kotla Marg, New Delhi at the time of submission of completed application form.
The tuition fee and Development fee for this category of students shall be 3125 US $ and 800 US $ per annum respectively. All other dues will be same as for other local students and can be paid either in US $ or in in Rupees currency.
All FN candidates are required to deposit student visa endorsed to TIET.The VISA should be valid for the prescribed duration of the programme.
Eligibility criteria :

The application complete in all respects must reach TIET on or before 29-05-2006 .

- Equivalence Certificate from AIU and student VISA for FN candidates.
3 The admission will be made on the merit of the aggregate marks in the qualifying exam.In case of tie, candidate senior in age shall rank higher in order of merit.

GUIDELINES/COURSE OUTLINES FOR MSc (BIOTECHNOLOGY) ENTRANCE EXAMINATION TO BE CONDUCTED BY TIET, PATIALA
The entrance examination will consist of two papers of two hours duration carrying 100 marks each as given below:
Paper-I will have questions at the level of 10+2 (CBSE) carrying 40 marks. This paper consists of 60 multiple-choice questions subdivided into Sections I, II, III. While section I will have 20 questions from Physics and Chemistry and must be answered by all the candidates, section II will have 20 questions from mathematics and section III will have 20 questions from Biology. The candidates have the option to answer question from either Section II or Section III.
Paper-II will have multiple choice questions of the level of B.Sc carrying 60 marks. This paper consists of 90 multiple-choice question subdivided into Section I,II, III. Section I will have 30 questions from Chemistry and must be answered by all candidates.Section-II will have 30 Questions from Mathematics and physics and Section III will have 30 questions from Biology and other branches of the life sciences. The candidates have the option to answer questions from either Section II or III.
